IOA Withdraws Membership of Taekwondo Federation of India Over Compliance Issues
Taekwondo Federation of India Faces Membership Withdrawal from IOA
New Delhi, October 22, 2024: The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has withdrawn membership from the Taekwondo Federation of India (TFI) over compliance issues.
Non-Compliance with World Taekwondo Recognition
In a letter addressed to Mr. Ishari K. Ganesh, President of TFI, Mr. Kalyan Chaubey, Joint Secretary and Acting CEO of IOA, expressed concerns over TFI’s failure to secure recognition from World Taekwondo, despite repeated instructions from IOA and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS).
Initial Membership and Conditions
The IOA initially granted TFI membership in May 2023, under the condition that it complies with the National Sports Code and obtains affiliation from World Taekwondo, the international governing body for the sport. However, despite continuous reminders, TFI has not met this crucial requirement.
MYAS and IOA Communications
MYAS had also recognized TFI under similar conditions in a letter dated March 17, 2023, emphasizing the need for World Taekwondo affiliation. A reaffirmation letter from MYAS, dated August 5, 2024, once again stressed the importance of compliance.
Impact on Indian Taekwondo Athletes
The lack of recognition from World Taekwondo puts Indian athletes at risk, as they may be barred from competing in international events. The IOA’s decision has heightened concerns about the future of Indian taekwondo, pushing TFI to expedite its efforts to meet the required standards.
IOA’s Commitment to Compliance
This decision has sent waves across the Indian sports community, with IOA reaffirming its commitment to ensuring that all national sports federations meet international standards and follow good governance practices.
